ps aux: is that service running, or are you guessing?

ps aux | grep nginx

What it does

ps aux lists every running process with its owner. Pipe it into grep to find one by name. Replace nginx with any program.

Why it matters

Spotting a process you don't recognise, or one running as the wrong user, is a basic detection skill.
